The village of Watapandura was identified as a potential model village through the European Union in Sri Lanka and the Maldives funded OCEAN project where Self Help Groups (SHGs) were formed. Following the successful completion of the project SHG members from all divisions of Delthota have begun some form of self employment and built up a combined savings of over Rs.1,700,000. Furthermore, small cooperatives have been formed to support the growth of these small businesses.
One such successful cooperative has been the Swayanpalitha Milk Society in Watapandura. Through the support of Commonwealth of Learning the WDC was able to build and equip a milk collection centre for the dairy farmers in Watapandura, developing their supply chain and their business prospects.
